I only learned about the site below because the co-director of the Center for Digital Research in the Humanities at UNL helped with the digitization process of making Lou Gehrig's letters available on the internet.
It's fairly striking to me that she would have helped in this because it is the same disease (ALS) that caused my dad to die in 1996. I'll never forget the cheerful smile he gave to everyone when we visited him at the Masonic home in Plattsmouth, NE or the many, many laughs we had watching ice skating and doing our best to figure out what he was saying. The really unfortunate timing of his passing was that he had just earned a degree in business but couldn't find a job because he was "over qualified," something I imagine a lot of people are being told in this economy.
Anyway, this site is a great insight into what must have been a very confusing time for the Gehrig family since his was one of the first cases of this mysterious disease.
